FAYETTEVILLE — Although the Richmond baseball team plated all of its runs in the first two innings, and only landed one of its four hits over the next five frames, it was still able to hold on for a 3-1 win at Jack Britt on Friday.

Cam Carraway and the Raider defense made play after play from the mound and in the field, respectively, in order to keep the home team from taking advantage of their rather slow night at the plate.

Carraway, who pitched all seven innings, struck out six batters in the win and went through a stretch where he retired 12 consecutive batters — starting with a strikeout the bottom of the first and ending with a groundout in the fifth.

His streak would be broken by Jack Britt’s Armando Viera, who made it to first base on a throwing error.

Richmond (6-3, 5-1 Sandhills Athletic Conference) took a 1-0 lead at the top of the first when Jake Ransom brought in Tyler Bass, who was walked to start the game, from second base with an RBI double.

Garrett Richardson put the Raiders ahead by two runs in the second when he beat the toss home after Nolan Allen was able to make contact. Two bats later, Brett Young helped them to a 3-0 lead with an RBI single that scored Hunter Parris.

Parris made it on base with a bunt.

Jack Britt (4-2, 4-2 SAC) was on pace to end the night without a hit, but Chase Jernigan ruined Carrway’s no-hitter — and finally got the home team on the scoreboard — with an one-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Following a quick three-and-out for the Raiders at the top of the seventh, the Buccaneers were looking to either tie it up or secure the win. Zachary Aranda gave them some hope with a lead-off single, but there wasn’t enough damage done over the next three bats (groundout, pop fly, hit by pitch) and the game ended on a groundout from Marcus Novy.

Carraway walked five batters and allowed two hits. Young hit a single in the fifth inning to end the night with two hits.

Richmond is due for a quick turnaround, as it’s scheduled to host Northwest Guilford at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Solo shots lift softball to 2-1 win at Jack Britt

FAYETTEVILLE — Neither team was able to score as many runs in the rematch, but a couple of solo shots from Payton Chappell and Paige Ransom helped the Richmond softball team complete the regular-season sweep of Jack Britt.

Ransom lifted one over the fence in the top of the third inning, Chappell did the same in the fifth and the Lady Raiders (8-0, 6-0 Sandhills Athletic Conference) held on for the 2-1 win over the reigning state champions Friday evening.

Ransom led Richmond with three hits while Chappell, Kenleigh Frye and Taylor Parrish each landed one.

Chappell’s long ball was the team’s 20th home run of the season.

Jack Britt (4-3, 3-3 SAC) got a solo shot of its own from Catie McGrath, who played a huge part in the Lady Buccaneers’ late rally in the teams’ first meeting earlier in the week, but that was all it could do on the scoring front.

The Lady Raiders got a solid game from Greyson Way in the circle, as the senior ace earned nine strikeouts and gave up four hits and allowed one earned run. Way now has 67 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched this season.

Richmond expects to match its best start since 2015 when it visits Marlboro Academy (S.C.) on Monday.

Girls soccer cruises to 6-0 win at Seventy-First

FAYETTEVILLE — The Richmond girls soccer team closed out the week with a dominant 6-0 win at Seventy-First on Friday.

Kaitlyn Huff got the Lady Raiders (6-2, 5-1 Sandhills Athletic Conference) going with an early goal, Jessi Graham scored on an assist from Emily Parsons and then Deanna Gomez put one in to help them to a 3-0 lead before the half.

Jayana Nicholson didn’t waste any time coming out of the break, as the senior midfielder snuck one into the back of the net in the 42nd minute. Chloe Wiggins joined the scoring party moments later — her third goal of the season — and then Avy Lucero put her stamp on the win by punching in a free kick with 26:25 left on the clock.

Richmond will be looking to extend its win streak to four games when rival Scotland visits on Tuesday.
